Died October 10, 1853, Paris. French architect and decorator. He went to Paris in 1779 to study under Joseph Père (the Younger Père), and in 1785 was awarded the Prix de Rome and studied in Rome. After the French Revolution, he served Napoleon I and renovated the Malmaison mansion, and later served Louis XVIII and Louis Philippe. He established the Empire style, which combined Italian classicism and romanticism, and, together with C. Percier, designed the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (1806), the restoration of the Palais Royal, the staircases of the Louvre and the Tuileries palaces, and Josephine's bedroom and library at the Malmaison mansion (c. 1805). His main works include Palais, maisons, etc., à Roma (1798) and, with Percier, Recuil de décorations intérieures (1801).

フランスの建築家，装飾家。 1779年にパリに出て，ジョゼフ・ペール (小ペール) のもとで学び，85年にローマ大賞を得てローマに留学。フランス革命後ナポレオン1世に仕えて，マルメゾンの邸館の改築にあたり，その後ルイ 18世，ルイ・フィリップに仕えた。イタリアの古典主義とロマン主義とを結んだ作風アンピール様式を築き，C.ペルシエとともにカルーゼル凱旋門 (1806) ，パレ・ロワイヤルの修復，ルーブル宮殿とチュイルリー宮殿の階段，マルメゾンの邸館のジョゼフィーヌの寝室と図書館 (05頃) などの設計を行なった。おもな著作に『ローマの宮殿と邸館』 Palais，maisons，etc.，à Roma (1798) ，ペルシエとの共著『室内装飾集』 Recuil de décorations intérieures (1801) がある。
