Born: September 20, 1762, Pontoise Died October 10, 1853, Paris. French architect and decorator. He went to Paris in 1779 to study under Joseph Père (the Younger Père), and in 1785 was awarded the Prix de Rome and studied in Rome. After the French Revolution, he served Napoleon I and renovated the Malmaison mansion, and later served Louis XVIII and Louis Philippe. He established the Empire style, which combined Italian classicism and romanticism, and, together with C. Percier, designed the Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel (1806), the restoration of the Palais Royal, the staircases of the Louvre and the Tuileries palaces, and Josephine's bedroom and library at the Malmaison mansion (c. 1805). His main works include Palais, maisons, etc., à Roma (1798) and, with Percier, Recuil de décorations intérieures (1801).
