1906‐96 A writer and explorer from what is now the Orange Free State in South Africa. Born into an old family of Dutch settlers, his father served as Prime Minister of the Orange Free State, and he spent his childhood on a farm. He began writing while at university, became a newspaper reporter after graduating, and traveled to Japan in 1926. In 1930 he became editor-in-chief of Cape Time, but resigned the following year due to the anti-apartheid campaign. His first novel, The Countryside (1934), deals with the relationship between racism and the left-wing movement. During World War II he joined the British Army and was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Java. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
