A faunal region. It includes the African continent south of the Sahara Desert and the island of Madagascar, and is further subdivided into the Ethiopian and Malagasy subregions. It is also sometimes called the Paleotropical region together with the Oriental Region. About two-thirds of the mammals and about three-fifths of the birds in this region are endemic, and representative animals include gorillas, chimpanzees, giraffes, hippos, ostriches, and secretary birds. 動物区の一つ。サハラ砂漠以南のアフリカ大陸,マダガスカル島を含み,さらにエチオピア亜区,マラガシー亜区などに細分されるし,また東洋区と一緒にして旧熱帯区と呼ばれることもある。この区に分布する哺乳類のうち約3分の2が,鳥類のうち約5分の3が固有種であり,代表的な動物としてゴリラ,チンパンジー,キリン,カバ,ダチョウ,ヘビクイワシなどがある。
