Naoya Uchimura

Playwright. Born in Tokyo. Real name Sugawara Minoru. Graduated from Keio University Faculty of Economics. Became a student under Kishida Kunio, and premiered his debut work Shusui-rei at Tsukijiza in 1935 (Showa 10). After World War II, he released Zokirin, Distant Triumph, Okinawa, and other plays. He also pioneered the field of broadcast dramas, and his NHK radio serial With Eriko (1949-1952) was a huge hit. His adaptations include Yoru no Raihosha (Visitors in the Night), and he has also written a book titled Dramaturgy Studies. His older brother was the stage director Sugawara Takashi (1903-1970).

劇作家。東京生まれ。本名菅原実(すがわらみのる)。慶応義塾大学経済学部卒業。学生時代に岸田国士(くにお)門下となり、1935年（昭和10）に処女作『秋水嶺(しゅうすいれい)』を築地座(つきじざ)で初演。第二次世界大戦後は『雑木林』、『遠い凱歌(がいか)』、『沖縄』などを発表。また放送劇の分野も開拓し、NHK連続ラジオドラマ『えり子とともに』（1949～1952）は大ヒットした。翻案劇に『夜の来訪者』、また『ドラマトゥルギイ研究』の著書もある。演出家菅原卓(たかし)（1903―1970）は実兄。
