Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 913-959. He ascended to the throne at the age of eight after his uncle Alexander, who had ascended to the throne after his father Leo VI's death (912), was killed in battle against Bulgaria. His mother Zoe then served as regency (until 919), and his father-in-law Romanos I (until 944) ruled until he became emperor in both name and reality in 945. Due to these circumstances and the relative peace of both his foreign and domestic affairs, he particularly enjoyed literary activities, and became one of the central figures in the literary revival movement known as the Macedonian Renaissance.

ビザンティン皇帝。在位913‐959年。父レオ6世の死後(912)即位した叔父のアレクサンドロス帝がブルガリア戦で戦死した後8歳で即位。その後母ゾエの摂政(919まで)，舅の共同皇帝ロマノス1世(944まで)の政権が続き，彼が名実ともに皇帝となったのは945年である。こうした境遇と外政･内政がともに比較的平穏であったこともあって，彼は文芸活動を特に好み，マケドニア･ルネサンスと呼ばれる文芸復興運動の中心人物の一人となった。
