905‐959 Byzantine Emperor. Reigned 913-959. He ascended to the throne at the age of eight after his uncle Alexander, who had ascended to the throne after his father Leo VI's death (912), was killed in battle against Bulgaria. His mother Zoe then served as regency (until 919), and his father-in-law Romanos I (until 944) ruled until he became emperor in both name and reality in 945. Due to these circumstances and the relative peace of both his foreign and domestic affairs, he particularly enjoyed literary activities, and became one of the central figures in the literary revival movement known as the Macedonian Renaissance.
