An ancient Babylonian city located 32 km southeast of Uruk. Tarsankala, now Iraq. There are traces of human habitation from the 3rd millennium BC, and the Amorite Napranum (reigned 2025-05 BC) founded the dynasty around 2025 BC. Since the fifth king Gungunum defeated Lipit-Ishtar of Isin in 1924 BC, Larsa controlled the major cities of Sumer and Akkad such as Ur, Lagash, and Uruk and maintained its dominance. It also conducted trade between India and the Euphrates River basin. However, Larsa's rule in southern Mesopotamia came to an end when its last king, Rim-Sin, was defeated by Hammurabi of Babylon around 1770 BC. Excavated in 1933 by A. Pharaoh, it revealed remains of a ziggurat, a temple, and the palace of King Nur-Adad, along with Neo-Babylonian and Seljuk ruins.
