Bandicoot - Bandicoot (English spelling)

Japanese: バンディクート - ばんでぃくーと(英語表記)bandicoot
Bandicoot - Bandicoot (English spelling)

A general term for animals belonging to the order Marsupiales and family Paramelidae. The Paramelidae are classified into 7 genera and about 20 species, and are distributed in Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea and the surrounding islands, but many species are endangered. Size varies from species to species, from 17 to 55 centimeters. The snout is long and pointed, and is suitable for digging in the ground. The front legs are vestigial except for the second and third toes. The second and third toes of the hind legs are small and fused, and the first toe is vestigial or completely missing. The hind legs are longer than the front legs, and are suitable for digging holes and jumping. The hair varies from silky to coarse. The brood pouch is well developed and opens backwards. There are 6 to 10 papillae. They live alone or in pairs in grasslands, forests, and thickets, and are nocturnal. They build their nests in shallow depressions in grass or forest undergrowth, covering them with twigs and grass. Some species also dig underground burrows. They are insectivorous or omnivorous. They give birth to 2-6 young, which are raised in a pouch.
