The epidermis is a mixture of keratinocytes that fall off the surface of the skin, sweat secreted from sweat glands, lipid components secreted from sebaceous glands, and dirt from the outside world. The epidermis is made up of a dozen or so cell layers on the surface of the skin, and keratinocytes are the so-called dead cells in the outermost layer, which overlap to form the stratum corneum. This stratum corneum acts as a protective layer for the skin, and if the entire layer is peeled off with adhesive tape, excessive moisture will leak from the body and various substances from the outside world will be absorbed into the skin, causing various skin disorders.

皮膚表面から脱落する表皮の角質細胞に，汗腺から分泌される汗，脂腺から分泌される脂質成分や外界からのよごれなどが混じりあったもの。表皮は皮膚の表面にある十数層の細胞層からなり，角質細胞はその最外層にあるいわゆる死んだ細胞で，これらは重なりあって角質層を形成している。この角質層は皮膚に対する保護作用をしており，粘着テープで角質層全層を剝離（はくり）すると，体内から過剰の水分の漏出がおこったり，外界から種々の物質が皮内に吸収されたりして，いろいろな皮膚障害をおこす。
