Phenanthroline

C ₁₂ H ₈ N ₂ (180.20). A compound in which two CHs of phenanthrene are replaced by N, and there are three isomers. [ I ] 1,7-Phenanthroline: Produced by the Skraup synthesis using m -phenylenediamine or 7-aminoquinoline and glycerin. Needle crystals containing two molecules of water of crystallization. Melting point 65.5 °C. Melting point of the anhydrous form is 78-78.5 °C. Soluble in hot water, ethanol, and dilute inorganic acids, insoluble in ether, benzene, and ligroin. Derivatives such as hydrochloride and picrate can be produced. [ II ] 1,10-Phenanthroline: Produced by the Skraup synthesis of o -phenylenediamine or 8-aminoquinoline. White crystals containing one molecule of water of crystallization. Melting point 93-94 °C. Melting point of the anhydrous form is 117 °C. Soluble in water, benzene, alcohols, and acetone, insoluble in petroleum ether. It forms chelates with iron, copper, cobalt, nickel, etc. as a bidentate ligand. With iron(II) it forms a red complex salt [Fe(C ₁₂ H ₈ N ₂ ) ₃ ] ²⁺ , which is used as a redox indicator in permanganate titration and cerium(IV) titration. Iron(III) complex salts are pale blue in color. [ III ] 4,7-Phenanthroline: Produced by the Skraup synthesis of p -phenylenediamine or 6-aminoquinoline. Needle crystals. Loses water of crystallization at 100°C. Melting point: 173°C. Easily soluble in ethanol and chloroform, soluble in hot water, slightly soluble in ether, benzene, and carbon disulfide. Adding iron(III) to an ethanol solution produces a reddish-yellow color. Derivatives such as hydrochloride and picrate can be produced.

C₁₂H₈N₂(180.20)．フェナントレンの二つのCHをNで置換した化合物で，3種類の異性体が存在する．【Ⅰ】1,7-フェナントロリン：m-フェニレンジアミンまたは7-アミノキノリンとグリセリンを用いるスクラウプ合成により生成する．2分子の結晶水を含む針状晶．融点65.5 ℃．無水物は融点78～78.5 ℃．熱水，エタノール，希無機酸に可溶，エーテル，ベンゼン，リグロインに不溶．塩酸塩，ピクラートなどの誘導体ができる．【Ⅱ】1,10-フェナントロリン：o-フェニレンジアミンまたは8-アミノキノリンのスクラウプ合成により生成する．1分子の結晶水を含む白色の結晶．融点93～94 ℃．無水物は融点117 ℃．水，ベンゼン，アルコール類，アセトンに可溶，石油エーテルに不溶．鉄，銅，コバルト，ニッケルなどと二座配位子としてキレートをつくる．鉄(Ⅱ)とは赤色錯塩 [Fe(C₁₂H₈N₂)₃]^2＋ をつくり，過マンガン酸塩滴定，セリウム(Ⅳ)滴定において酸化還元指示薬として用いられる．鉄(Ⅲ)錯塩は淡青色を呈する．【Ⅲ】4,7-フェナントロリン：p-フェニレンジアミンまたは6-アミノキノリンのスクラウプ合成により生成する．針状晶．100 ℃ で結晶水を失う．融点173 ℃．エタノール，クロロホルムに易溶，熱水に可溶，エーテル，ベンゼン，二硫化炭素に難溶．エタノール溶液に鉄(Ⅲ)を加えると赤黄色を呈する．塩酸塩，ピクラートなどの誘導体ができる．
