Austrian music aesthetician and music critic. After studying law at the University of Vienna and becoming a civil servant, he published his major work, Aesthetics of Music (1854). He lectured at his alma mater from 1856 and later became a full professor. Aesthetics of Music cuts through the conventional notion of the time that music expresses emotion, stating that the uniqueness of music lies in its form itself, and that music expresses nothing other than music itself. He advocated music that is integrated with words and dance, and defended Schumann and Brahms as composers who stood for absolute music, against R. Wagner, who used the concept of absolute music negatively. On the other hand, he rejected F. Liszt and Wagner as composers who stood for program music, and harshly criticized Bruckner's symphonies, which he considered to be Wagnerian, sparking a major debate that divided the German music world. オーストリアの音楽美学者，音楽評論家。ウィーン大学で法律を学び官吏となったのち主著《音楽美論》（1854年）を刊行。1856年から母校で講じ，のち正教授。《音楽美論》は，音楽は感情を表現するものという当時の通念を一刀両断にし，音楽の独自性は形式それ自体にあり，音楽は音楽そのもの以外の何者をも表現しないと規定。言葉や舞踊と一体化した音楽を提唱し，〈絶対音楽〉の概念を否定的に用いたR.ワーグナーに対し，〈絶対音楽〉の側に立つものとしてシューマンやブラームスを擁護する一方，〈標題音楽〉の側に立つ作曲家としてF.リストやワーグナーを排撃し，ワーグナー派と見なしたブルックナーの交響曲を酷評，ドイツ音楽界を二分する一大論争を巻き起こした。ほかにウィーンの音楽史に関する《ウィーン演奏会史》２巻（1869年，1870年）などの著書がある。→楽劇
