[Died] October 22, 1854. Lützelflüh Swiss novelist. Real name Albert Bitzius. A representative figure of realism. As a pastor, he spent his life among the peasants of the Emmental region. With his keen observational eye, he portrayed peasant life as it was, and established peasant literature in the German language. His main works are Der Bauernspiegel (1837), Uli der Knecht (41), Wie Anne Bäbi Jowäger haushaltet (43-44), Uli der Pächter (49), and a collection of short stories Die schwarze Spinne (42).
