Ewald Banse

Japanese: バンゼ(英語表記)Ewald Banse
Ewald Banse
1883‐1953
German geographer born in Braunschweig. He studied under F. von Richthofen and A. Kirchhoff, and from 1906 onwards travelled to Tripoli, Egypt, Asia Minor, Libya, Morocco and other places, making the study of the Near East his lifelong pursuit. In addition to "Egypt" (1909), "The Orient" (1910), "Turkey" (1915), "Desert, Palms, Bazaars" (1921), "Harem, Slaves, Caravans" (1921), and "A Thousand and One Nights" (1924), he wrote "Impressionism and Geography" (1920), "New Geography" (1922-25), "Landscape and the Spirit of the Surface" (1921), and "A Dictionary of Geography" (1923).He emphasized that the study of landscape as a living totality of geographical elements requires artistic intuition rather than an objective analysis of the elements, and that one should approach the "will to form" that is unique to each cultural landscape.
