Intermittent claudication

This is a condition in which severe pain is felt in the muscles of the lower limbs during exercise such as walking, making it difficult to exercise, and the condition returns to normal if walking is stopped or resting is maintained. If exercise is continued after the onset of pain, the muscles will begin to feel tender as well as spontaneous pain. The cause is obstructive arterial disease, which causes impaired circulation in the lower limbs, and exercise makes the blood supply even more inadequate. There are no symptoms when resting, as there is sufficient oxygen supply to the muscles.

歩行などの運動中に下肢の筋肉に激痛を覚えて運動が困難になり，歩行を中止するか安静にすればもとに戻る状態をいう。疼痛出現後も運動を続けると，筋肉に自発痛のほかに圧痛も生じるようになる。原因は，閉塞性の動脈疾患で下肢の血行障害があり，運動で血液の供給がさらに不十分になることによる。安静時は筋肉への酸素供給が十分なので症状はない。
