Japanese: 喫水 - きっすい

The depth below the waterline of a ship, i.e. the vertical distance from the bottom of the keel at the center of the hull to the waterline. Generally, the more cargo a ship carries, the deeper its draft becomes, but because of the increased danger, the load line is determined by law. The maximum draft in each case is indicated by the load line mark, although it varies depending on the type of ship, season, and sea area.

船の水面以下に沈んでいる深さ，すなわち船体中央のキール底面から水面までの垂直長さ。一般に船の積荷を増せば喫水は深くなるが，危険が増すため法規により満載喫水線を定めてある。船種，季節，海域により異なるが，それぞれの場合の最大喫水を満載喫水線標で明示する。
