A village in Oe County in northern Tokushima Prefecture. Population 1,657 (1995). A typical mountain village surrounded by the mountains of the Shikoku Mountains, with settlements scattered in the valley bottom of the Kawata River and its tributary, the Higashiyamatani River, which flows through the center, and on the gentle slopes of the mountains. An old transportation route runs from the neighboring Koyadaira Village to the southwest to the neighboring Yamakawa Town to the north, and part of it is now National Route 193. The main industries are agriculture and forestry, such as cedar, cypress, and shiitake mushrooms, but most of the residents are small-scale part-time farmers. In 1982, a resort facility was opened in the Okumaru area, utilizing the mineral springs that bubble up from the site of the old Higashiyama Mine (iron sulfide ore).
