1646‐1714 French economist. Sometimes written as Boisguillebert. Born into a wealthy aristocratic family in Rouen, the capital of Normandy, he studied law in Paris and returned to his hometown in 1676 to take up a judicial position, becoming a judicial vicar at the Parlement of Rouen in 1690. He was concerned about the plight of the common people suffering under heavy taxes in France under the reign of Louis XIV, and especially the impoverishment of rural areas, and published his major work, Le détail de la France, anonymously in 1695.
