Porphyry copper deposit

Disseminated copper deposits occur at the tops of granite intrusive rocks (porphyries) and in the surrounding rocks. Although the copper content is generally low (less than 1% copper), there are many large deposits with copper content of over 10 million tons, accounting for more than 50% of the world's copper reserves. Important by-products are molybdenum and gold. They are found in the Pacific Rim and in young orogenic belts from Iran to Yugoslavia since the Mesozoic era, but not in Japan. Major deposits include Bingham (United States), Cananea (Mexico), Chuquicamata and El Teniente (both Chile), Atlas (Philippines), and Yandera (Papua New Guinea).

花コウ岩質の貫入岩類(斑岩)の頂部とその周辺の岩石中に生じた鉱染状銅鉱床。一般に低品位(銅品位1％以下)であるが，含銅量1000万t以上に達する大規模な鉱床が多く，世界の銅埋蔵量の50％以上を占める。副産物としてモリブデンと金が重要。環太平洋地域およびイランからユーゴスラビアに至る中生代以降の若い造山帯に多く分布するが，日本には産出しない。主要鉱床はビンガム(アメリカ)，カナネア(メキシコ)，チュキカマタ，エル･テニエンテ(ともにチリ)，アトラス(フィリピン)，ヤンデーラ(パプア･ニューギニア)など。
