…In Italian Renaissance mansions, corridors were rarely used, except for colonnades around courtyards, and adjacent rooms were prominent. The use of corridors in residential buildings was revived in English Renaissance architecture, and in addition to corridors as connecting passageways, long corridor-type rooms called long galleries were created, which were initially used as martial arts training halls, but later were used primarily as art exhibition rooms (galleries). In 17th-century England, houses with a completely central corridor, such as Coleshill (c. 1650), were created, and in 18th-century terraced houses, separate corridors and staircases became common, and each room was independent, but it was not until the 19th century that the use of corridors to separate rooms was achieved in continental countries. …
