Greta Garbo

Japanese: ガルボ - がるぼ(英語表記)Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo

A great actress who represents American movies of the 1930s. Born to a poor family in Stockholm, Sweden. She started out as a hat model, then worked in PR films, before studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she gained a reputation for her leading role in Maurits Stiller's The Legend of Gösta Berling (1924). She then appeared in G.W. Papst's German film Joyless City (1925). In 1925, she was recruited by MGM in Hollywood along with Stiller and moved to the United States. She was promoted under a heavy advertising campaign that made her a popular star, appearing in films such as The Body and the Devil (1927). Her cool features, husky voice with a strong accent, and gossip-filled yet partly mysterious private life attracted much attention, making her the reigning beauty queen of Hollywood. She appeared in such films as "Anna Karenina" (1927, remade in 1935), "Anna Christie" (1930), "Grand Hotel" (1932), "La Traviata" and "Conquest" (both 1937), and "Ninotchka" (1939), before retiring at the age of 36 after "The Two-Faced Wife" (1941). She remained single her whole life, and lived a secluded life away from the public eye.
