Iwatahara

Japanese: 磐田原 - いわたはら

Also known as the Iwatahara Plateau. An alluvial plateau in southwest Shizuoka Prefecture, east of the Tenryu River. Like the Mikatahara Plateau on the opposite bank, it is an uplift of an old alluvial fan of the Tenryu River. It is about 4km east to west and 13km north to south, and is made up of the Iwatahara gravel layer and red soil layers. The groundwater table is deep, so development was delayed. Currently, the Tomei Expressway runs through the area, and the Iwatahara Parking Area is located here. Many large and small ancient tombs are scattered around the southern end of the plateau, as well as the site of the provincial capital of Totomi Province, Mitsuke, a post station on the Tokaido, and the ruins of Totomi Kokubunji Temple (a special historic site) in Nakaizumi nearby.

磐田原台地ともいう。静岡県南西部，天竜川東方の洪積台地。対岸の三方原台地と同じように天竜川の古い扇状地の隆起したもの。東西約 4km，南北 13kmで，磐田原礫層と赤土層から成る。地下水面が深く，開拓は遅れた。現在は東名高速道路が通り，磐田原パーキングエリアが設置されている。台地南端には多くの大小古墳群が散在するほか，遠江国国府の所在地，東海道の宿駅の見付があり，その付近の中泉に遠江国分寺跡 (特別史跡) がある。
