A perennial plant of the Gesneriaceae family (APG classification: Gesneriaceae). The leaves grow at the base of the plant, are elliptical-oval with winged stalks at the base, and have glossy, wrinkled surfaces. In winter, the leaves curl into a ball to overwinter. The flower stalk is 10-30 cm long. From June to August, umbels are produced and crimson-purple flowers open sideways. The corolla is deeply divided into five lobes, with the lobes curling back. It grows in the shade and damp rock faces of hilly and mountainous areas, and is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu south of Akita and Iwate prefectures. Its name comes from the fact that it grows on rocky areas and its leaves resemble tobacco leaves. On the Pacific coast of Honshu from the Kanto region westward, there is a variety with hairs on the flower stalk, inflorescence, and underside of the leaves, called Gesneria. The Gesneria genus has actinosymmetric corollas and five stamens, and two species are found in Asia.
