Group hunting is practiced in the UK and the US. It began in the late 17th century when British aristocrats began raising foxhounds for this purpose, but it was not until the 19th century that it became established as a modern sport. The hunting season runs from November to April of the following year. Formal hunting is conducted by a master, who acts as the host, and is accompanied by a huntsman who is in charge of the hounds, and guests participate in the hunting, following a set procedure. It reached its peak as entertainment for aristocrats and gentlemen before World War I, but criticism from animal rights advocates grew, and after World War II, bills to ban hunting were repeatedly proposed in the UK, and the bill was passed in November 2004 and came into effect in February 2005.
