Quercia - Quercia (English spelling) Jacopo della Quercia

Italian sculptor. Born in Quercia Grossa near Siena. His name first appears in art history when he participated in the famous contest for the north portal of the Florence Baptistery in 1401, but no works remain. The first work that Quercia is certain to have worked on is the tombstone of Ilaria del Carretto in Lucca Cathedral (c. 1406). Many researchers point out the influence of Northern European Gothic sculpture in his sculpting technique, and some traces of this can be seen, for example, in the reliefs of the Fountain of Gaia in Siena (1414-19). The relief Zacharias in the Temple, which he created for the baptismal font of the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Siena between 1417 and 1430, shows the influence of the pictorial spatial expression seen in Donatello's Feast of Herod (1427) for the same font. From 1825 onwards, while working on other projects, he devoted himself to the decoration of the facade of the Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna, leaving behind masterpieces such as the Virgin and Child and Old Testament stories, and died there.

イタリアの彫刻家。シエナ近くのクエルチア・グロッサに生まれる。彼の名前が美術史上に初めて現れるのは、1401年のフィレンツェ洗礼堂北側門扉(もんぴ)の有名なコンテストに参加したときであるが、応募作品は残されていない。確実にクエルチアの手になる最初の作品は、ルッカ大聖堂にあるイラリア・デル・カレットの墓碑（1406ころ）である。彼の彫法に北ヨーロッパのゴシック彫刻の影響を指摘する研究者が少なくないが、たとえばシエナの『ガイアの噴水盤』（1414～19）の浮彫りにはその形跡がある程度うかがわれる。17～30年にシエナのサン・ジョバンニ洗礼堂に制作した洗礼盤の浮彫り『神殿のザカリア』には、同じ洗礼盤のドナテッロによる『ヘロデの饗宴(きょうえん)』（1427）にみる絵画的空間表現からの影響が認められる。25年以降には、ほかの仕事も手がけながらボローニャのサン・ペトロニオ聖堂正面の装飾に没頭し、聖母子や旧約物語の傑作を残し、同地で世を去った。
