American graphic designer and art director. Born in New York. Influenced by European modern design such as the Bauhaus and De Stijl, he established his own unique, simple composition. His impactful and witty designs made him active in the fields of advertising, editorial design, and corporate identity. From 1938 to 1945, he served as art director for the magazines Esquire and Apparel Arts. In 1955, he became a design consultant for IBM, where he was involved in the company's corporate identity project, designing the IBM logo (1956) as well as numerous posters, packaging, and pamphlets. He also designed logos for Westinghouse Electric and NeXT's ABC television.

Originally an abbreviation for Research and Development Corporation. Its current official name is RAND. A research and development organization in the United States. Founded by private scientists and engineers during World War II. Has influenced the U.S. government on strategic issues, issues with the former Soviet Union, and computer research. Forced the military to adopt improved missile systems.
