Soviet Encyclopedia - Dictionary of Towers and Towers (English)

The Soviet encyclopedia.

[Mitsunaga Yayoshi/Tatsue Miyamoto]

First Edition

After the success of the revolution, the Soviet government decided to publish an encyclopedia to promote a correct understanding of Soviet politics, economy, culture, and so on, not only at home but also internationally. Otto Yuryevich Schmidt, Dean of the Department of Natural Sciences at Kom Academy, became editor-in-chief. Publication began in 1926, and after surviving a turbulent period of construction and war, 65 volumes and one supplementary volume were completed in 1947. The encyclopedia contained over 65,000 entries.

Second Edition

The so-called "bloody purges" at the end of the Stalin era saw the deaths of many opposition politicians, including Trotsky, Bukharin, and Radek, completely changing the political situation. As a result, the journal was re-planned, with Sergei Ivanovich Vavilov (1891-1951, later B. A. Bubdensky) as editor-in-chief, and completed 50 volumes and an index (2 volumes) between 1950 and 1958. This was centered on major topics, with many minor topics added, for a total of about 100,000 items.

Third Edition

The third edition, which incorporated the international political and economic situation and advances in science and technology, was published under editor A.M. Prokhorov, and 30 volumes containing 100,000 entries were published between 1971 and 1978. An index was also published in 1981. Furthermore, Macmillan translated it into English in the United States (New York) and published it as the 31st volume of the Great Soviet Encyclopedia (1973-79, index published in 1983).

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation published 12 volumes of the Great Russian Encyclopedia ( Bol'syaya Rossiyskaya Entsiklopediya/Bol'syaya Rossiyskaya Entsiklopediya) (1998-2003).
