The capital of the province of the same name in southern Turkey. Formerly named Ain Tab or Antep. Cotton textiles, sheepskin processing, and food industries are thriving in the city, and it exports tobacco and cotton. Since ancient times, it has been a strategically important transportation point connecting Anatolia and Syria. At the end of the Ottoman period, it was occupied by France as a result of World War I, but the citizens resisted and contributed to the Turkish independence movement.
