Doppler, Albert Franz
Born: October 16, 1821 in Lemberg
Died July 27, 1883. A flutist, conductor and composer from Baden, Austria, near Vienna. Educated by his father, an oboist, he became the principal flute at the Budapest Opera in 1847, the principal flute and ballet conductor at the Vienna Court Opera in 1858, and professor of flute at the Vienna Conservatory in 1865. His compositions include several operas, including the opera Judith (1870), ballet music, orchestral works and flute concertos, but in Japan, the short flute solo piece Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy is a favorite.

[Died] March 17, 1853. Austrian physicist. Studied at the Vienna University of Technology, and became a professor of mathematics at the Technical University in Prague (1835), before becoming a professor at the University of Vienna (50). He proposed the Doppler effect, which describes the relationship between the frequency of light and the speed of a light source. This effect was later applied to sound phenomena. This phenomenon is widely used in astronomical observations and the measurement of the Mössbauer effect.

オーストリアのフルート奏者,指揮者,作曲家。オーボエ奏者の父から教育を受け,1847年ブダペスト歌劇場の首席フルート奏者,58年ウィーン宮廷歌劇場の首席フルート奏者ならびにバレエの指揮者,65年からウィーン音楽院のフルート科教授をつとめた。作品にはオペラ『ユデット』 Judith (1870) を含む数曲のオペラ,バレエ音楽,オーケストラ作品,フルート協奏曲などがあるが,日本ではフルート独奏の小品『ハンガリー田園幻想曲』が愛好されている。

オーストリアの物理学者。ウィーン工科大学に学び,プラハ国立工業大学数学教授 (1835) を経て,ウィーン大学教授 (50) 。光の振動数と光源の速度との関係を説くドップラー効果を提唱。これはのちに音の現象にも適用された。この現象は,天体観測やメスバウアー効果の測定などに広く用いられている。
