1587‐1645 A favorite of King Philip IV of Spain. He initially aspired to become a priest and studied at the University of Salamanca, but entered the world of politics when he inherited the family estate following the death of his brother. He became a chamberlain when Philip IV was still Crown Prince, and gained favor with him. He took real political power when he ascended to the throne in 1621. He was an ambitious man who often acted on his own initiative, but he was also a capable politician who worked tirelessly for the country. Externally, he considered it Spain's mission to defend Catholicism, and he was actively involved in European issues, such as intervening in the Thirty Years' War, to promote national prestige.
