It is an agricultural tool that uses wind power to separate various grains, and is said to have been introduced from China during the Genroku period (1688-1704). The main working parts consist of a funnel for supplying materials, a wind tunnel containing an impeller, and a sorting tunnel. Materials dropped from the funnel into the sorting tunnel are hit by a crosswind from the impeller (driven by hand or motor), and refined grains fall at the front, impurities at the far end, and waste grains in between. Traditionally, it was widely used to separate rice, wheat, beans, etc., but recent agricultural machinery for grains (threshers, combine harvesters, rice hullers, etc.) has incorporated winnowing blades into the sorting section, so the use of winnowing blades as stand-alone tools has decreased.
