Tarokaja - Tarokaja

Japanese:
Tarokaja - Tarokaja

A character in Kyogen. In Kyogen, a servant to a master is usually called Tarokaja. When two or more people of the same rank appear, they are named Jirokanja, Saburokanja, and so on (there is no one above Shirokanja), and Tarokaja is the common name of the senior servant. Taro is a general name for a leader or representative person, and kanja originally meant a boy who has been given the title of coming of age, but the meaning has evolved to mean a boy, a young servant, or a simple attendant, and the combination of Taro and kanja is likely the origin of the word Tarokaja.

Of the 263 current Kyogen plays, Tarokaja appears in 95, 48 of which are as shite (the main character), followed by 18 as monk shite and 16 as feudal lord shite, making Tarokaja a representative personality in the world of Kyogen. He is a character that fully expresses the lifestyle of the common people, being a faithful servant, but also a brilliant and lazy man who outwits his master, a big drinker, and a mischievous man who enjoys life to the fullest.
