…However, what cannot be overlooked at the same time is the awakening to the spiritual heritage of the past. Examples include the Cecilia movement, which advocated a return to the Palestrina style, the historical research and new practice of Gregorian chant (Solesmes method) centered around the Solesmes Abbey in France, and the reevaluation of pre-Bach organ music and organs (the organ movement) centered around three pillars: A. Schweitzer, Montgomery Rufus Straube (1873-1950), and Wilibald Gurlitt (1889-1963). The 19th century saw such great composers as Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Verdi, Bruckner, and Brahms, while the 20th century saw the innovative organ music of Messiaen, who stood on the side of mystical Catholicism, the modern neo-baroque style of Protestant church music by Distler and Pepping, and the works of Honegger and Franck, who wrote new pages in the history of the oratorio.
