La Chartreuse de Parme - The Abbey of Parme

A full-length novel by French author Stendhal. Published in 1839. The source material is an incident from an ancient Italian record, but by transferring the story of a young aristocrat who later became Pope to Fabrice, the son of an Italian aristocrat who worshipped Napoleon, the author's creative power soared. The book was completed after only 50 days of dictation. Balzac highly praised the analysis of the court politics of the small principality of Parma, comparing it to Machiavelli's The Prince, but under the shackles of this work, the protagonists are forced to constantly pursue their own happiness outside the bounds of morality. Fabrice goes on a series of wild adventures, including recklessly taking part in the Battle of Waterloo and being accused of murder after a fling with love, and finally discovers his love for Clelia while in prison. His aunt Sanseverina showers him with an almost incestuous love. His lover, Mosca, the able Prime Minister of Parma. Clelia, the daughter of the prison warden, who remains faithful to her love for Fabrice despite the conflict between her faith and love. All of these characters desire to "live" in the highest sense of the word. By telling the story of their pursuit of freedom and happiness, with love for Italy and affection for his own youth, the author has succeeded in creating a novelistic universe of the clearest quality.

フランスの作家スタンダールの長編小説。1839年刊。素材はイタリアの古記録中の事件にあるが、のち教皇となった一青年貴族の物語を、ナポレオンを崇拝するイタリア貴族の息子ファブリスの身の上に移すことによって、作者の創作力は奔騰した。わずか五十余日の口述筆記で本書は成ったのである。バルザックは、小君主国パルムの宮廷政治の分析をマキャベッリの『君主論』になぞらえて絶賛したが、その桎梏(しっこく)の下で、主人公たちは絶えず道徳のらち外に自らの幸福を追求せざるをえない。むてっぽうにワーテルローの会戦に馳(は)せ参じたり、恋の火遊びから殺人の罪に問われたりするなど、野放図(のほうず)な冒険を重ねつつ、ついに獄中でクレリアとの恋を知るファブリス。彼にほとんど近親相姦(そうかん)的な愛情を注ぐ叔母サンセベリーナ。その愛人でパルム公国の敏腕宰相たるモスカ。監獄長の娘であり、信仰と恋の相克に悩みながらもファブリスへの愛を貫くクレリア。彼らはいずれも、ことばの最高の意味で「生きる」ことを欲する人物たちである。彼らの自由と幸福の追求の物語を、イタリアへの愛と自らの青春への愛惜を込めて語ることによって、作者はもっとも澄明な小説的宇宙を築き上げることに成功した。
