A port city in the Götaland region in southern Sweden. Population 85,742 (2001). It is located on the northern shore of Laholm Bay, which leads to the North Sea. It has a good harbor and is home to a metal industry. It is close to the Jutland Peninsula and was part of Denmark until 1645, which left its mark on the language and customs, and this has always been a political issue. In the second half of the 19th century, the construction of a railway and improvements to port facilities led to rapid development. The townscape retains vestiges of the Danish period, such as castle walls and Gothic churches, making it beautiful. The Halmstad Group of painters are representative of a period of modern Swedish painting. [Koko Nakajima] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
