Halmstad - Halmstad (English spelling)

A port city in the Götaland region in southern Sweden. Population 85,742 (2001). It is located on the northern shore of Laholm Bay, which leads to the North Sea. It has a good harbor and is home to a metal industry. It is close to the Jutland Peninsula and was part of Denmark until 1645, which left its mark on the language and customs, and this has always been a political issue. In the second half of the 19th century, the construction of a railway and improvements to port facilities led to rapid development. The townscape retains vestiges of the Danish period, such as castle walls and Gothic churches, making it beautiful. The Halmstad Group of painters are representative of a period of modern Swedish painting.

スウェーデン南部、イョータランド地方の港湾都市。人口8万5742（2001）。北海に通ずるラホルム湾の北岸に位置する。良港を有し、金属工業がある。ユトランド半島に近く、1645年までデンマーク領であったため、言語・風習にその影響が残り、つねに政治上の問題点となってきた。19世紀後半に、鉄道敷設、港湾施設改良により急速な発展を遂げた。城塁、ゴシック様式の教会など、デンマーク領時代のおもかげを残す町並みが美しい。画家のハルムスタード・グループはスウェーデン近代絵画の一時期を代表する存在である。
