A unit of area in the shakkanho system. After the Taiho Code, it was used to express land area, and under the Weights and Measures Act enacted in 1891, it was determined that 36 square shaku (1 ken square) was a bu, 30 bu was a mu, and a dan was 10 mu, or 300 bu. It is about 992 m2, close to 10a. In common usage, it is also written as tan, a unit unique to Japan, and the double unit is cho, which is equal to 10 dan. 尺貫法における面積の単位。大宝令以後，地積を表すのに用いられ，1891年制定の度量衡法により，36平方尺(1間四方)を歩（ぶ），30歩を畝として，段は10畝，すなわち300歩と定められた。約992m2であり，10aに近い。慣用では反とも書き，日本特有の単位で，倍量単位は10段に等しい町である。なお，和服地の長さないし広さの単位として端(反，段)がある。【三宅史】
