Folk dance and song from northern Spain. The Aragonese version is especially famous and is called Jota Aragonesa. It is accompanied by guitars and tambourines, and usually plays a tonic and dominant note every four bars. It has a fast 3/4 rhythm, and is danced by a single or multiple men and women in pairs, with castanets in hand, and expresses courtship through vigorous leaps and turns, and contains many comical elements. In the Valencian Jota, cante (song) is also sung, and the rhythm is more detailed than in the Aragonese Jota, and it is danced by a large group in various formations. There is a theory that the name Jota was named after Aben Jot, an Arabian minstrel who first created the dance in the 12th century, but there is little evidence to support this.
