A stand on which books are placed during reading, and is an abbreviation of shokendai. The part on which the book is placed is tilted forward to make it easier to read. An old shokendai from the Nara period remains in the Shosoin Repository, and fine ones with makie (lacquer lacquer) were also made in the Momoyama period. Meanwhile, in the world of Japanese music, mitai are used as music stands for narrators and singers, mainly in Noh (during practice), Joruri, Nagauta, and Biwa music. The shape varies depending on the genre and school, but since it is used while sitting upright, most are about 30 to 40 centimeters high, and help add a visual sense of formality to the musical performance. In general, Joruri-related mitai are elaborately decorated, and the mitai for Gidayu-bushi are particularly large and lacquered, decorated with gold makie and tassels. In Tokiwazu, a vermilion-painted stand called an "octopus leg" is sometimes used. [Kuniko Yui] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
