Aito [town] - Aito
A former town in Aichi County, in the central-eastern part of Shiga Prefecture. The eastern part of the town is mountainous and an alluvial plateau spreads across it. In the western part, an alluvial fan stretches along the Aichi River. The town produces rice, vegetables, grapes, pears, and other produce, and also raises livestock. The Meishin Expressway runs north-south through the western part of the town. In February 2005, the town merged with Yokaichi City, Egenji Town in Kanzaki County, Gokasho Town, and Koto Town in Aichi County to become a city, Higashiomi City. 40.89 km2 . 5,610 people (2003).
