Miami - Maiami (English spelling) Miami

A tourist and resort city in southeastern Florida, USA. Population: 362,470, metropolitan population: 3,876,380 (2000). Located at the mouth of the Miami River and facing Biscayne Bay. The first settlement was established in the 1870s near Fort Dallas, which was built during the war with the Seminole Indians in 1835, and city incorporation took effect in 1896. In the same year, businessman Henry Morrison Flagler (1830-1913) extended the Florida East Coast Railroad to its terminus in Miami, developed the port, and promoted tourism development. In the 1920s, Florida experienced a land boom, and Miami developed at the same time. Currently, about 500,000 Latin Americans, mostly of Cuban descent, live in the Miami metropolitan area.
