A plant pattern with leaves that spread out like a fan, and often with a spiral pattern at the base that continues to extend to the left and right. It is said to have originated in ancient Egypt, and is an important motif in arabesque patterns. It was once called honeysuckle pattern because the shape of the flower resembles honeysuckle, but the current theory is that it is a fantastical plant pattern. It became popular along with Buddhist art, and the leaf shapes became more complex, giving rise to the Hosoge pattern.

葉が扇状に広がった植物文様で，根もとの渦文が左右にのびて連続することが多い。古代エジプトが起源とされ，唐草文の重要なモティーフとなっている。花の形がスイカズラ（忍冬）に似るので忍冬(にんどう)文と呼ばれたこともあったが，現在では空想的な植物文様とみる説が有力。仏教美術とともに普及，葉形が複雑になり，宝相華(ほうそうげ)文が生まれた。
