The capital of the Balearic Province of Spain. Population 290,372 (1981). It is located on the island of Mallorca, one of the Balearic Islands, which are a group of seven large and small islands in the western Mediterranean Sea, and faces the Bay of Palma. It was originally called "Mallorca" like the island, but it adopted its current name in the 18th century. Because of its location at a key point for military and trade activities in the western Mediterranean, it passed through the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals (5th century), and Byzantine Empire (6th century), before falling into the hands of Muslims in the 8th century. In 1229, it was occupied by Jaime I of the United Kingdom of Aragon, which was expanding its power in the Mediterranean Sea, and when the Kingdom of Mallorca was established, it became its capital.
