Pharaoh's ant

An insect belonging to the family Formicidae in the order Hymenoptera of the Insecta class. Originally an ant that lives in tropical regions, it has invaded and spread its distribution around the world due to human activity. In Japan, it was first recorded being discovered in Osaka City in 1930 (Showa 5). In tropical regions, it nests in hollows in trees, but in countries where it has invaded, it also nests in gaps in the floors and walls of houses, approaching food and causing harm. Mating flights and territoriality have deteriorated, and nests multiply by fragmentation.

昆虫綱膜翅(まくし)目アリ科に属する昆虫。元来、熱帯地方にすむアリであるが、人間の活動に伴い世界各地に侵入して分布を広げている。日本では1930年（昭和5）に大阪市で発見されたのが最初の記録である。熱帯地方では樹木の空洞などに営巣するが、侵入国では家屋の床や壁のすきまなどにも営巣し、食物に寄り付いて害を与える。結婚飛行や縄張り性が退化し、巣の増殖は分巣によって行われる。
