A system for designating the seasons for sporting events. For example, swimming in the summer and rugby in the winter. Originally, sports suited to the climate and environment of the UK were assigned to each season. In other words, it was originally established as a system to designate sports suited to each season in accordance with the change of seasons. As a result, the seasons are reversed in the northern and southern hemispheres. However, in recent years, as sporting facilities have improved, it has become possible to hold sports regardless of the season. At the same time, the seasonal system is beginning to crumble.

スポーツの競技種目の季節を指定する制度。たとえば，夏の水泳競技，冬のラグビーのように。もともとはイギリスの気候･風土に合う競技を季節ごとに振り分けたもの。つまり，四季の変化に合わせて，それぞれの季節に合う競技種目を指定して制度化したのが始まり。したがって，北半球と南半球ではシーズンが逆転する。しかし最近では，競技施設が充実してきたので，シーズンに関係なく競技が行えるようになってきた。それとともにシーズン制が崩れつつある。
