Hakone Pass

Japanese:
Hakone Pass

Located in the southwestern edge of Kanagawa Prefecture, on the border between Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun and Mishima-shi, Shizuoka Prefecture, this pass is where National Route 1 crosses the western part of the ancient outer rim of the Hakone volcano. It is 849 meters above sea level. It is the shortest route from the Tokai region to the Kanto region, and became the main Tokaido road in the early Heian period, later used as a byway, and became the main road again in the Edo period. The distance from this pass to both Odawara and Mishima post towns is about 16 kilometers (four ri), and it was called "Hakone Hachiri." From the pass, you can see the central crater cone of the Hakone volcano (Mt. Kami, Mt. Komagadake, etc.), the crater lake (Lake Ashi), the crater plain (Sengokuhara), the peaks of the ancient somma, as well as the Fuji and Ashitaka volcanoes, Mishima, the towns of Numazu, the North Izu Plain, Suruga Bay, and more. The Jikkoku Toge Road, Lake Ashi Skyline, and Hakone Shindo road start from here.
