1851‐1921 A Spanish female writer. An aristocrat with a strong desire for knowledge and linguistic skills, she was quick to adopt foreign literary trends, from naturalism to symbolism, modernism, and the Russian literature of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky, and popularized them in Spain, but at heart she was a conservative Christian writer. In her critique Problems of the Day (1883), she introduced Zola's theory of fiction, and put this theory into practice in her masterpiece, The House of Urroa (1886), which depicts the decadence of a provincial aristocracy against the backdrop of a changing society. In addition to her 40-year career as a writer, she also contributed to her fame as the first woman to become a full professor at a university.
