Argentine politician and soldier. One of the leaders of the independence movement. Born in Buenos Aires, he studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he acquired a liberal trade philosophy before returning to Argentina. After devoting himself to economic reform in the colony, he became a minister in the autonomous government when the independence movement began in May 1810, and served as commander in the army that pursued the royalists in Paraguay and Alto Peru (now Bolivia). In 1812, he established the blue and white Argentine flag, and the day of his death, June 20, is now a national holiday known as Flag Day.

アルゼンチンの政治家，軍人。独立運動の指導者の一人。ブエノス･アイレス市に生まれ，スペインのサラマンカ大学に留学して自由主義的貿易思想を身につけ帰国。植民地における経済改革に尽くしたのち，1810年5月独立運動が始まると自治政府の大臣となり，パラグアイやアルト･ペルー(現，ボリビア)の王党派追討軍の司令官を務めた。12年には青･白のアルゼンチン国旗を制定し，彼の没した6月20日は国旗の日として祝日になっている。
