1770‐1820 Argentine politician and soldier. One of the leaders of the independence movement. Born in Buenos Aires, he studied at the University of Salamanca in Spain, where he acquired a liberal trade philosophy before returning to Argentina. After devoting himself to economic reform in the colony, he became a minister in the autonomous government when the independence movement began in May 1810, and served as commander in the army that pursued the royalists in Paraguay and Alto Peru (now Bolivia). In 1812, he established the blue and white Argentine flag, and the day of his death, June 20, is now a national holiday known as Flag Day.
