The name given to Sweden's dominance along the Baltic coast in the early modern period. The Baltic Sea was the only sea route for the Baltic coastal countries, including Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Prussia, and Russia, and in the Middle Ages, the Hanseatic League controlled the shipping ports of these countries and, with Lübeck as its leader, dominated commerce in the Baltic Sea. On the other hand, the only outlet to the open sea of the Baltic Sea was the Øresund (Sund) strait, which led to the North Sea, and both sides of this narrow strait were inherently Danish territory, leading to conflict between Denmark and Lübeck throughout the Middle Ages.
