…Perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family (illustration). It grows in sunny roadside grass patches and forest edges, with vine-like stems. It is unique among Campanulaceae in that the corolla and ovary are fused together, and the fruit does not dehisce but forms a berry. It is widely distributed from the Kanto region westward, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Taiwan, but is relatively rare. The roots are white and fleshy. The leaves are opposite or alternate, cordate or ovate, 3-5 cm long, and powdery white. The flowers grow solitary in the leaf axils and hang down. The corolla is broad bell-shaped, reddish purple, about 1.5 cm in diameter, and has 5 lobes. The lower half is fused to the ovary, and the separate part is about 1 cm long. …
