A device that uses the residual heat of flue gas to preheat the combustion air sent to the furnace. It not only reduces heat loss from exhaust gas and increases boiler efficiency, but also helps improve combustion efficiency, reduces incomplete combustion, and reduces soot generation. Most large boilers use this type. Depending on the type of heat transfer, they are broadly divided into once-through and regenerative types. The former heat the air in contact with the other side from the high-temperature gas that is in contact with one side of a metal heat transfer surface, and include plate-type air preheaters and tubular-type air preheaters. The latter expose a metal plate to high-temperature gas for a certain period of time to absorb heat, and then expose it to air for a certain period of time to heat the air, and include fixed, rotating, and mobile types. 煙道ガスの余熱を利用して炉に送る燃焼用空気を予熱する装置。単に排ガスによる熱損失を減らしボイラ効率を高めるだけでなく，燃焼効率の改善に役立ち，不完全燃焼も少くなってすすの発生も減る。大型ボイラはほとんどこれを採用している。伝熱形式によって，貫流式と再生式とに大別される。前者は金属伝熱面を介して一面に接する高温ガスから他面に接する空気を加熱するもので，板型空気予熱器と管型空気予熱器とある。後者は金属板を一定時間高温ガスに接触させて熱を吸収し，次にまた一定時間空気に接触させて空気を加熱するもので，固定式，回転式，移動式がある。一般に広く用いられているのは回転式のユングストローム空気予熱器である。 (→蓄熱式熱交換器 )
