A label affixed to the inside of a book to indicate the owner of the book. It is also called ex libris (Latin for "from the library of..."). The owner's name is sometimes clearly stated in the design, and sometimes implied by the design and a slogan, but in either case it is artistically printed using copperplate, woodblock, or lithograph. Another type of bookplate is the label that university libraries affix to books to express their gratitude to donors. This has been a practice in Europe since the mid-15th century, but in Japan it is not as common as an ex-library stamp. エクス・リブリスex libris(ラテン語、「~の蔵書から」の意)ともいう。
