Bookplate - Zoshohyohyo (English spelling)

A label affixed to the inside of a book to indicate the owner of the book. It is also called ex libris (Latin for "from the library of..."). The owner's name is sometimes clearly stated in the design, and sometimes implied by the design and a slogan, but in either case it is artistically printed using copperplate, woodblock, or lithograph. Another type of bookplate is the label that university libraries affix to books to express their gratitude to donors. This has been a practice in Europe since the mid-15th century, but in Japan it is not as common as an ex-library stamp.

図書の所蔵者を明示するために、図書の見返しなどに貼(は)るラベル。エクス・リブリスex libris（ラテン語、「～の蔵書から」の意）ともいう。所蔵者名は、図柄のなかにはっきりと示されていることもあるし、図柄と標語で暗示したりすることもあるが、いずれにしても銅版、木版、石版などで趣味を凝らして刷られている。そのほか、大学図書館が図書の寄贈者に対して感謝の気持ちを表すために貼るラベルも一種の蔵書票である。ヨーロッパでは15世紀中ごろ以来の習慣であるが、日本では蔵書印ほど一般的ではない。
