Hoosier State

...The state's name means "Indian land." It is also known by another name, "Hoosier State." There are various theories about the origin of the name Hoosier for the state's residents, but one theory is that it comes from the word hoozer, which means "highlander" in the dialect of the Cumberland region of England, and which has come to mean "inner country people" or "pioneers," and has been used to refer to the state's residents since the 1830s.
